Northern Sweden is a vast landscape of towering alpine peaks and endless vistas of pine forest, Polar plains, meadows and glaciers. Its eastern edge is fringed by a rolling coastline, peppered by islands and skerries. No description of Northern Sweden is complete without mentioning Swedish Lapland - Europe’s last remaining wilderness.
Lovers of the outdoors life will love northern Sweden’s legendary national parks; Abisko and Sarek being two outstanding examples. Northern Sweden is also the ancestral home of the Sami, the indigenous people of the region, whose unique traditions and culture thankfully thrive today. Bear, elk, the wolverine, the golden eagle and the rare Arctic Fox have their home here in Northern Sweden. As if these natural riches were not enough, this the land of the Midnight Sun and the staggeringly beautiful Northern Lights,
Many travellers who visit Northern Sweden for the first time are astonished to discover such a vast, majestic landscape, with such enormous expanses of pristine wilderness and breathtaking scenery, so close and easily accessible from the hustle and bustle of central Europe. The wilds of Northern Sweden and Scandinavia are frequently – and sadly – referred to as ”Europe´s last wilderness”.
Rent a holiday home at Are and you can experience dog sledding through the white wilderness of the Jämtland Mountains.
Tommy Bernhardsson, a born-and-bred Jämtlander and professional dog musher, runs Åre Dog Sled Adventures. So you are in capable hands as you dog sleigh through the white-clad forests, flatlands, lakes and mountains of Jämtland. Alaskan Huskies, bred for the task, pull the sleds and cover between 15 km and 40 kilometres a day.
There are day trips and longer trips on offer. The trips lasting several days give you the chance to stay overnight in a log cabin, or tent, grilling sausages and drinking coffee around the campfire. You might even get to see reindeer, wolverine, lynx and arctic fox, and if you are very lucky the incomparable Northern Lights. The centre has rafting and hiking activities in the summertime. On the hiking trips you take care of your very own Husky that carries your supplies. You sleep in a tent, the Husky sleeps outside.
